CCHS Reads Welcomes Tony Dungy

On March 9, Central Catholic will welcome Coach Tony Dungy, author of the New York Times best seller Quiet Strength, as the featured speaker in the CCHS Reads program. Coach Dungy will address the student body after they have read his January 2009 book, Uncommon, Finding Your Path to Significance.

The CCHS Reads program began at Central Catholic during the 2006-07 school year to encourage students to read for fun. In the program, teachers and students read the same book and then study it as it is integrated into classroom lessons. CCHS Reads is designed to promote lifelong reading by encouraging students to read and discuss an author’s work before and after the author visits the school for an all-school assembly.

Coach Dungy is a former professional football player and NFL coach. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Giants. Dungy was head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001 and the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 to 2008. He became the first African-American head coach to win the Super Bowl when the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in 2007. He retired from coaching in 2008 and now serves as an analyst for NBC’s Football Night in America.

In his book, Uncommon, Dungy reveals lessons on achieving significance, particularly focusing on what it means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offering young men few positive role models.

Coach Dungy is graciously spending time with us because he was impressed with the CCHS Reads program and our commitment to connecting students with books and authors.  He will address Central Catholic students in the Sullivan Center at 2:00 pm., and the event is also open to the general public.  Tickets are available for $20 in the main office or athletic office at CCHS.

Central Catholic and Whiteford Valley Partnership

Central Catholic and the Whiteford Valley Golf Club West Red Course are continuing their revenue-sharing partnership.

The West Red Course is operated out of the “old” clubhouse at 8440 Memorial Highway in Ottawa Lake, Michigan. For more information and tee-time availability, please call 734-854-7713.

Complete the Vision!

There are still opportunities to support the Gallagher Stadium project. Alumni and friends of the school are being asked to join Charles Gallagher '56 and Diane (Bertling) Gallagher '58 in helping to complete their vision that has enabled CCHS to be the first Toledo-area Catholic high school with its own varsity stadium. The Gallaghers' $3 million donation toward the stadium completion was announced in September 2006, and the first game was played in the new stadium in September 2007.
