Library Bookmobile Making Regular Visits to Central Catholic

By Natalie Rekart, CCHS Junior

Are you interested in reading, but can’t remember the last time you’ve stepped into a library? There’s still hope for you, thanks to the Toledo Public Library’s Bookmobile!  The Bookmobile is a “library-on-wheels” that travels from place to place, making the library’s resources even more accessible.  Organized by Mrs. Angela Mills, a teacher in our English Department, the Bookmobile visited our school for the first time on November 12.  It will return twice a month for the rest of the year from 3-3:45 p.m.

On the upcoming dates listed below, students will be able to walk out of school and browse through a variety of books, magazines, music, and movies available to borrow.  By bringing the Toledo Public Library to Central Catholic, Mrs. Mills has eliminated some of the obstacles our teachers face in connecting their students to literature.  Many teachers share her passion for engaging their students in literature and are often the reason why students become interested in reading in the first place.

Junior Zoe Williams said she had absolutely no interest in reading before Mrs. Lisa Hunter, her English teacher last year,  recommended she read What Happened to Monday? by Darlene Rubinoff during the silent reading period in her class.  Since then, she has developed a love for literature and has a soft spot for romance and young adult books.  Mrs. Mills said, “There’s a book out there for everyone… It’s okay to abandon 100 books to find one you really enjoy.”

Thomas Bell, one of the two librarians that visited CCHS in November, expressed how fulfilling his work is for him.  He has worked in his field for almost 19 years, including mobile services for the last eight years.  Devoting most of his life to serving the public, Bell loves bringing joy through literature to low-income housing, assisted living facilities, community centers, and schools.

Mrs. Mills said that reading other peoples’ stories helps us to build empathy, and allows us to engage in stories we never would have experienced otherwise.  The opportunity to have the Bookmobile come to CCHS breaks down barriers between students and literature- you can walk right in after school to discover something new.  The purpose of the Bookmobile is to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to explore content and diversify their interests- so even if you believe reading isn’t for you, check out the Bookmobile!
