13 Fighting Irish Garner All-Northwest District Division III Accolades
Thirteen members of the Central Catholic football team have been named to the All-Northwest District Division III squad, as selected by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association media panel from the district. CCHS’s 13 honorees are the most by any school, regardless of division.
The Fighting Irish, who are amid a school-record 28-game winning streak, had 7 1st-team selections. That list included senior RB Marquan Braswell and senior DL Michael Cannings II, who shared D-III Offensive & Defensive Player of the Year honors, respectively. In addition, senior OL Marc Nave was selected Lineman of the Year, and Head Coach Greg Dempsey was tabbed co-Coach of the Year.
Joining Braswell, Cannings, and Nave on the 1st team were senior WR Jaylen Watson, senior OL Elijah Williams, senior LB Davonte’ Wright-Ward, and senior DB Marvon Greenlee.
Four Fighting Irish also collected 2nd-team laurels – senior OL Kendric Bankston, senior OL Tyrell Green, senior DL Ronald Collins III, and senior DB Jayden Barnes, while 2 others collected honorable mention accolades – junior DL Curtis Strode, Jr., and sophomore DB Victor Singleton, Jr.
Cannings is earning all-district honors for a 3rd-consecutive fall, while the quintet of Nave, Williams, Greenlee, Bankston, and Green are garnering recognition for the 2nd-straight year.
No 1 seed Central Catholic (13-0) returns to the gridiron against No. 3 seed Tiffin Columbian (11-2) on Friday in the Region 10 Finals of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division III State Playoffs. The opening kick against the Tornadoes is slated for 7 p.m. at Robert J. Bishop, Jr. Stadium on the campus of Clyde High School (1015 Race St., Clyde, 43410).
Should the Fighting Irish advance to the ‘Final 4’ for the 10th time in program history, they would face Region 9 winner, No. 1 seed Youngstown Ursuline (13-0) or No. 7 seed Chardon (10-3), on Friday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at a neutral site.
