After the Bell with Staffulty Member & Alumnus Logan Lorenzen

Have you ever wondered what teachers and school staff do when they are not at school?  We decided to find out!

This is the 3rd in a series of stories about some of Central Catholic’s staffulty members and what they like to do after the bell rings at the end of the day.  Some have surprising hobbies, others have creative talents.  With this series, we hope to shine a spotlight on the special people who work with our students every day!

Trying Out Triathlons

This is alumnus Logan Lorenzen’s (Class of 2012) 5th year teaching at Central Catholic, and he teaches World Studies, AP Seminar, and Nutrition.  He has previously taught U.S history, geography, physical education, and academic assistance courses.  He is also a varsity assistant coach for the Fighting Irish football team, and he has coached freshman and JV boys’ basketball at his alma mater.

When he was a student at Central Catholic, Logan played football and basketball. Outside of sports, he was a member of the Mixed Chorus and Sideline Spirit, and he was a Homework Help tutor.

Last summer, Logan started competing in triathlons.  “I watched a documentary about a man who completed an Ironman with his disabled brother,” Logan said.  “He pulled him on a small boat during the swim, pulled him on the back of his bike, and pushed him in a wheelchair during the run.  It was very inspiring and got me interested in competing in triathlons.”

So far, Logan has participated in 1 half-Ironman and 3 sprint triathlons.  The 3 events in a triathlon are swimming, biking, and running, and they occur in that order.  A half-Ironman is a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run.  A sprint triathlon consists of a .2-mile swim, 15-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile run.  All 4 of the events Logan has completed took place in Ohio.

“Staying in shape and the competition is what motivates me in these events,” said Logan.  “The hardest part is that headphones are not allowed.  A lot of people, including me, listen to music while working out, running, etc.  So not being able to is one of the reasons these events are so challenging for me.”

Logan finished his half-Ironman in 6 hours and 37 minutes, which put him 907th out of 1,400 participants.  In one of his sprint triathlons, he finished 2nd in his age bracket.  “I don’t have a goal of winning any of the triathlons, though it would be nice,” he said.  “I am just trying to compete and have fun.

“I would definitely encourage people to get involved in these kinds of events.  It takes a lot of training and hard work, but it is mostly mental.  Believe it or not, most people are capable of completing these events.  You just have to fight your own mind to keep going.”
