Central Catholic Announces Partnership with Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma

Central Catholic High School has entered into a partnership with the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma, beginning in the 2024-25 school year.

“To say that we are excited to partner with the Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma to minister to our amazing students would be an understatement,” said Head of School Kevin Parkins.  “We are grateful for the incredible witness of Christ's love that the Sisters of Mercy of Alma show the world each and every day.”

Starting this fall, one religious sister will be placed at CCHS.  Her role will be to teach theology, and she will live at the convent that has already been established in Toledo.

Throughout the next few years, Central Catholic will work with the Sisters of Mercy to determine an appropriate convent near the CCHS campus.  The Sisters of Mercy will also expand their presence to three religious sisters teaching at Central Catholic.

CCHS has a rich history of religious sisters ministering to its students.  In fact, Central Catholic has had over five different groups of religious sisters work on campus over the past century with Sr. Berneta Schneider, SND, as the last full-time sister on staff in 2020.

“It is historic!  Having religious sisters back to teach and serve at Central Catholic is important to our vision of creating disciples of Jesus, as they are able to apply the wisdom of the Church from the Sacred Heart of Jesus,” said CCHS Priest Leader Fr. David Kidd.  “God is at the center of Central Catholic and who we are as individuals and as an Irish family.  Religious sisters will help our students deepen their relationship with God and with one other.  They will help students appreciate the virtues of the Catholic Tradition, internalize those virtues, and become adults in the Catholic faith and leaders in their communities, serving others as they are called to do.”

The 2024-25 school year begins on Tuesday, August 20.

The Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma is a religious institute of pontifical right dedicated to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.  Established in 1973 in response to the renewal called for in the Second Vatican Council, it recognizes the Venerable Catherine McAuley as its original foundress.
