Central Catholic Thrives at Division II Track & Field District Championship

The Central Catholic girls’ and boys’ track & field teams competed at the Division II District Championship on Thursday and Saturday at Oak Harbor High School. The Fighting Irish girls’ squad placed 2nd among 11 schools with 101 points, while the boys’ team finished 4th amidst 13 programs with 69 points.


The girls’ team secured 8 1st-place finishes at the 2-day meet, while the boys’ team captured the top spot in 4 events. The Top 4 finishers in each event qualify for the upcoming Regional Championship.


On the girls’ side, senior Jayla Watson and sophomore Nyla King were both part of 4 1st-place finishes.


Individually, Watson crossed the finish line 1st in the 100-meter hurdles (15.58) and 300-meter hurdles (47.18), while King was 1st in the 100-meter dash (12.24) and 200-meter dash (25.73).

In relays, Watson ran the opening leg in the victorious 4x100-meter (48.89) and 4x400-meter (4:06.66), while King ran the anchor leg in the 4x200-meter (1.42.04) and 4x100-meter.

In addition to Watson and King, the duo of junior Jara Johnson and junior Taylor Scribner established a new meet record in the 4x200-meter relay. Johnson and Scribner were both members of a team-high 3 victorious relays.

Also capturing 1st-place finishes for the girls’ squad in individual events was senior Mary Ellis in the 400-meter dash (58.15).

On the boys’ side, senior Solomon King recorded a squad-best 4 1st-place finishes. Individually, King finished ahead of the competition in the 100-meter dash (10.83) and 200-meter dash (22.27). He also sprinted a leg of the victorious 4x-100-meter relay (42.44) and 4×200-meter relay (1:28.08).

In the relay’s, senior Donovan Hooker and senior RJ Maddox Jr. were a part of both victorious squads.

The Fighting Irish will return to the track on Thursday, May 25 for the Division II Regional Championship at Lexington High School. The 2-day event is slated to begin at 4 pm on Thursday. The 2nd day of the regional meet will take place on Saturday, May 27 at 11 am.
