Football Opens 2023 Campaign at Non-League Opponent Findlay on Friday
The Central Catholic football team will kick off its 2023 season against former Three Rivers Athletic Conference member Findlay this Friday, Aug. 18. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at JC Donnell Memorial Stadium and Friday’s non-conference matchup will be televised on BCSN.
The Scarlet & Gray will be led this fall by senior captains – Marquan Braswell, Michael Cannings II, Marc Nave, & Elijah Williams.
A season ago, the Fighting Irish defeated the Trojans, 50-17, on the road. CCHS outscored Findlay 21-0 in the 2nd half to claim its 10th-straight triumph in the series. RB Chris Edmonds ran wild in the game, totaling 249 yards and 4 scores. QB Ty’Waun Clark also had an excellent game throwing the ball, finishing with 176 yards passing and 1 touchdown. WR Javon Murphy was Clark’s favorite target, hauling in 4 passes for 92 yards.
This fall will be Central Catholic’s 1st year in the Catholic High School League (CHSL). The CHSL, which was founded in 1926, is the largest Catholic high school league in the United States with 32 private-school members from around southeastern Michigan and Toledo’s 5 Catholic high schools. Earlier this month, CCHS was picked to win the Central Division in the CHSL in a vote by the conference’s head coaches.
The Fighting Irish are coming off a historic 2022 campaign that saw them capture their 5th OHSAA state championship in program history (1962, 2005, ‘12, ‘14, ‘22). They finished with a 15-1 overall ledger and a perfect 7-0 mark in the now-defunct TRAC.
