The Central Catholic football team sprinted away from Lutheran West, 49-14, on Friday in the 1st round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division III State Playoffs in Gallagher Stadium. With the dominating post-season triumph, CCHS improves to 10-1 overall.
The 2-time reigning state champions scored early and often vs. the Longhorns to force a running clock in the 2nd half.
Senior QB Isaiah Fox completed 5-of-8 passes for 141 yards and a season-tying best 3 TDs. The team captain also registered a TD on the ground against Lutheran West. Back on September 20, he tossed 3 TD passes vs. De La Salle Collegiate.
CCHS tallied 4 TDs in the 1st quarter and 2 more in the 2nd period to build a 42-0 cushion at the intermission. Six different CCHS players found the end zone in the opening 24 minutes. Fox connected on TD passes with senior WR Levelle Stokes III, junior WR Preston Fryzel, and junior WR Sharard Vaughn III to put the postseason contest out of reach. Senior RB Tyler Morgan and Fox were also credited with TDs on the ground in the 1st half.
Central Catholic tacked a pair of scores in the 2nd half by junior RB Jacob Spears and junior RB Jeremiah Fuller to make the final score 49-14.
Tonight’s victory will now set up a 2nd-round home matchup for the No. 1 seed Fighting Irish vs. No. 9 seed Revere (7-4) next Friday, November 8 at 7 p.m. The Scarlet & Gray has advanced to the 2nd round each of the last 14 years.
A member of the Chagrin Valley Conference, the No. 16 seed Longhorns wrap up their season with a 2-9 overall record.
