Football Throttles Upstart Clay on Homecoming, 45-7

The Central Catholic football team flexed its muscles in Friday’s Homecoming game against Oregon Clay, securing a convincing 45-7 win in Gallagher Stadium. With the dominating victory, the Fighting Irish improve to 6-1 overall, 4-0 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.

CCHS posted a decisive 441-161 advantage in total yards against the upstart Eagles (5-2, 2-2 TRAC) en route to recording its 19th-consecutive triumph in the series. The Scarlet & Gray finished with a whooping 276 yards rushing, compared to only 10 for the visitors.

Senior RB Chris Edmonds did a bulk of Central Catholic’s damage on the ground, tallying a game-high 100 yards on only 11 carries. The 2021 1st-team All-TRAC performer, who topped the century mark for the 6th-straight game, set the tone early with a pair of TD runs.

CCHS extended its advantage to 31-0 at intermission, thanks to scoring runs from senior QB Ty’Waun Clark and junior RB Marquan Braswell, as well as a 21-yard field goal off the foot of senior PK Brian Bishop. Braswell and Clark also had solid performances running the ball vs. Clay, tallying 68 and 60 yards, respectively.

With the clock running per OHSAA rules after halftime, Central Catholic continued to pour it on offensively, stretching its lead on the strength of Clark’s 2nd TD run.

Clay broke up the shutout early in the final period, but Central Catholic responded with a 7-yard TD burst from sophomore RB Tyler Morgan to make the final score 45-7.

The Fighting Irish limited the high-powered Eagles to their lowest scoring effort this fall to help them extend their TRAC winning streak to 29-consecutive contests.

Central Catholic, which is ranked No. 8 in the most recent Division II state poll, will return to the gridiron against rival Whitmer on Friday, Oct. 7. The opening kick against the Panthers will be 7 pm at Whitmer Memorial Stadium. A season ago, CCHS registered a 28-7 victory vs. the Panthers at home.
