Girls’ Basketball Doubles Up City League Power Start in Season Opener, 66-33

The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team posted a dominating 66-33 victory against Start on Wednesday in its season opener at Start HS. With the impressive road win, the Fighting Irish are 1-0 on the season.

The Scarlet & Gray broke open Wednesday’s non-conference matchup with a decisive 23-3 burst in the 2nd period vs. the 2-time reigning City League champions.

Senior Brooklyn Vaughn paced CCHS with a game-high 22 points, including 15 in the pivotal 2nd quarter. A season ago, Vaughn garnered 1st-team All-Ohio Division II accolades, averaging 15.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game.

Sophomore Ava Pietras added 11 points on the strength of 3 triples for Central Catholic, followed closely by the quartet of senior Sophia Farrugia (8 pts.), senior Corniya Clay (8 pts.), sophomore Serinity Bolden (7 pts.), and sophomore Marissa Justen (6 pts.).

Sinai Douglas and Komara Sylvester led the host Spartans (1-1) with 10 points each.

CCHS’s triumph vs. Start avenges last year’s 48-36 home setback, 1 of only 2 losses on the season.

Earlier in the evening, the CCHS junior varsity team suffered a 45-26 loss against Start.

Central Catholic returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 6 when it hosts Bowsher at 6:30 p.m. in the Sullivan Center. Tickets must be purchased online at www.CentralCatholic.org/tickets.
