Seniors Present Live Stations of the Cross
Members of the Central Catholic senior class presented a live Stations of the Cross to students and staffulty. This presentation is a tradition that began 12 years ago with the class of 2009. Laura Laws, who was a senior at that time, came up with the idea. She wrote the script and planned the event, and she gave it as a gift from the senior class to the school. The tradition continues each year as a way to bring everyone together in prayer and reflection before Easter break.
Two seniors, Owen Metzger, who played the role of Pontius Pilate, and Owen Thompson, who acted as a guard, took on the additional duty of building a new cross for this year’s occasion. The cross that had been used was accidentally broken during practice, just 36 hours before the live presentation, and these two students stepped up to build a new one. They have both worked on set construction for the Central Catholic spring musicals, and both have learned some of their skills from family members.
Thompson took the broken cross home, and he and Metzger designed the new one to be the same size and color as the old one. They purchased the wood needed for the base of the cross and constructed it first. Thompson’s family recently installed a new fence in their yard and had some wood left over, so the students used some of that to construct the new cross. They cut the wood to the proper dimensions and then put several coats of stain on it.
“The Stations of the Cross presentation has been a Central Catholic tradition, and we wanted to make sure the show could go on,” said Thompson. “It was hard work that needed to be done in a short amount of time, but it was an honor to be able to do it.”
“It was definitely an honor to contribute to this project,” added Metzger. “I’m happy to know that we built this cross well and it will be used by future students for years to come.”
