National Black History Month Q&A with Layla Jefferson
Layla Jefferson is a junior at Central Catholic High School (Class of 2022). Layla is involved in National Honor Society, Glee Club, Broomball and Kindness Club. In addition, Layla is in her first year participating in the African American Club.
If you could pick any figure central to Black History to have dinner with who would it be?
I would pick Marsha P. Johnson. I would ask for her advice on life and being a black woman. Sometimes it’s hard navigating life, and I think she would be the perfect person to ask for advice, since she is dealing with some of the same issues I struggle with.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month is a time to recognize black excellence and shine a light on a group that has been glossed over throughout America’s history and around the world.
What do you love about Central Catholic High School?
I love the positive and influential essence that CCHS gives off. I love being at school and seeing everyone’s face, even though we’re wearing masks.
Where would you like to see our city, state & country go from here in regards to Black History Month?
I would love for people to stop talking about the same individuals during Black History Month, like Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., to name a few. I know these are important people, but most everyone knows their story. We also need to discuss the unsung heroes of black history and those whose contributions are usually unknown, forgotten, or ignored.
