Yolanda Melendez, guest speaker in AP Language classes
Mrs. Cathy Farina invited a guest speaker to her senior seminar and AP Language classes. Yolanda Melendez, who previously taught at the Toledo Islamic Academy, spoke to the students about Islam and answered their questions. The speaker connected with the students’ activities because they have been reading books featuring main characters who are Muslims, which means they are followers of Islam, and the books have many details about Islam.
Ms. Melendez stressed that Islam is a religion, not a race, and she spoke about the five pillars that they base their life and goals on. She was raised Catholic and converted when she and her husband wanted to marry and have children. Students asked questions about things that are important in their own lives, such as how dating and marriage are viewed in her religion. They were also interested in the period of fasting and prayer known as Ramadan.
Mrs. Farina felt it would benefit her students to learn about another religion since it’s something they encounter in the world. This speaker was able to help them clarify any misconceptions they may have had.
