Football Coach Greg Dempsey Selected to Toledo City Athletic League Hall of Fame
Central Catholic football coach and alumnus Greg Dempsey (Class of 1990) has been inducted into the Toledo City Athletic League Hall of Fame. Coach Dempsey was among 7 student-athletes, 2 coaches, 1 team, & a distinguished citizen to join the HOF at an induction banquet on Monday at The Premier.
Coach Dempsey has been the Head Football Coach at CCHS since May of 2000. During his tenure, the Fighting Irish have gone 262-54 overall (record as of November 5) and qualified for the state playoffs 23 times, including the last 21 seasons.
The Scarlet & Gray has secured 5 state titles (2005, '12, '14, '22, '23) under the direction of Coach Dempsey, as well as finishing state runner-up once ('15), & reaching the state semifinals 3 other times ('16, '17, '19).
Since 2000, the Fighting Irish won the Toledo City League on 4 occasions (‘05, ‘06, ’07, ’08). In addition, they captured the Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) crown 9 times (‘13, ‘14, ‘15, ‘16, ‘18, ‘19, ‘20, ‘21, ‘22). Most recently, Central Catholic won the 2023 Catholic High League (CHSL) Central Division championship.
“Central Catholic High School is incredibly proud of Coach Dempsey and his induction into the City League Hall of Fame,” said Head of School Kevin Parkins. “While his accolades on the field are legendary, his work in forming young men is his greatest accomplishment.”
Coach Dempsey’s previous coaching experience includes 3 years as an assistant at Central Catholic from 1990-92 and 7 years as an assistant at Start High School for fellow 2024 TCAL HOF recipient Doug Pearson from 1993-99.
After graduating from CCHS, Coach Dempsey attended the University of Toledo and earned his bachelor’s degree in English secondary education and master’s degree in High School Administration and Supervision. He currently serves as the Athletic Director at his alma mater.
Greg and his wife Katie have 3 children, Lauren (Class of 2024), Ryan (Class of 2026), and Andrew (Class of 2028).
