5 Girls’ Basketball Players Earn All-District 7 Division II Accolades

Five members of the state-ranked Central Catholic girls’ basketball team have been named to the All-District 7 Division II squad. CCHS’s 5 honorees are the 2nd-most by any school in D-II, trailing only Bryan’s 6 recipients.

Highlighting the Fighting Irish’s selections was junior Brooklyn Vaughn, who was tabbed Player of the Year. Vaughn is currently averaging 14.8 points and a league-high 14.0 rebounds per game for the 2-time reigning TRAC champions. She has also totaled a whopping 18 double-doubles through the first 22 contests.

In addition, junior Corniya Clay garnered 1st-team honors, while senior Mary Ellis, senior Jai’Lynne Hitt-Swartz, and senior Jada Dames each received honorable mention accolades.

Central Catholic, the No. 1 seed in the sectional tourney draw for the Whitehouse District, returns to the hardwood against No. 8 seed Woodward on Thursday, Feb. 16. The opening tip versus the Polar Bears is scheduled for 6 pm at Liberty Center High School. A year ago, the Fighting Irish captured their 1st district title since 2016.

Tickets for Thursday’s postseason contest MUST be pre-purchased online at OHSAA.org/tickets (Basketball, Basketball – Girls, Division II, Region 6, Northwest 3, Select Game). Reminder, no tickets will be available to purchase at the gate. All tourney tickets are General Admission. Tickets cost $6 for students and $8 for adults. In addition, all students MUST purchase a ticket to attend Thursday’s contest.

Ranked No. 3 in the final Associated Press D-II state poll, Central Catholic currently sports a 20-2 overall record, including 13-1 in the league.
