Girls’ Basketball Throttles Woodward in 1st Round of Sectional Tournament, 65-16
The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team cruised to a 65-16 victory against Woodward in the 1st round of the Division II Sectional Tournament on Thursday at Liberty Center High School. With the dominating neutral-court triumph, state-ranked CCHS improves to 21-2 overall.
The top-seeded Fighting Irish were led by All-Northwest Ohio District Player of the Year junior Brooklyn Vaughn with a game-high 14 points.
Ranked No. 3 in the final Associated Press D-II state poll, the Scarlet & Gray also benefited from 12 points by junior Corniya Clay to stretch its winning streak to 6-consecutive games.
Sakiya Turner paced the Polar Bears with 12 points.
The 2-time reigning Three Rivers Athletic Conference Champion Fighting Irish return to the hardwood against Napoleon on Saturday, Feb. 18. The opening tip versus the Wildcats is scheduled for 6 pm at Liberty Center. Tickets for Saturday’s postseason matchup MUST be pre-purchased online at ohsaa.org/tickets (Basketball, Basketball-Girls, Division II, Region 6, Northwest 3, Division II, CCHS Game, Get Tickets).
Central Catholic and Napoleon will square off in the postseason for the 3rd-straight season. Last winter, CCHS posted a dramatic 47-42 come-from-behind win against the reigning D-II state champions in the District Semifinals at Paulding High School. The previous year, the Fighting Irish suffered a 54-38 setback in the District Semifinals at Paulding.
