Author Visits Central Catholic

Award winning author, Dr. John R. Wood, spoke to our students, faculty, and staff on January 22.

Dr. Wood grew up in southwest Ohio and has a deep passion and love for the Catholic faith and is very active in his local parish.  He spoke to our Central Catholic family about his book, Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way, which involves sports and the secret to success.

Dr. Wood explained that the key to success is to try your best and to finish with nothing left to give.  “It’s better to finish last and give 100% effort than finish first with 99% effort because God sees your heart.  God’s grace gives you power to do things you can’t do by yourself. Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God,” he said.

He also related sports to becoming a saint because the things that it takes to make you a champion are the same things it takes to make you a saint.  The virtues learned by playing sports that also help you in life are:

Self discipline
Perseverance and passion
Obedience
Repetition and recreation
Teamwork
Sportsmanship

He encouraged students to make good choices by asking themselves if what they’re doing is helping them to become a saint.

Dr. Wood and his wife Kristin currently reside in northwest Ohio with their four children.  He is a mobile eye doctor, and he travels to over 40 nursing homes and developmental disability facilities to provide eye care through his business, Mobile Eyes, LLC, which he started in 2007.
