Biology Students Visit Mercy

The Advanced Topics in Biology class visited the Medical Simulation Center at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.  Central Catholic students were able to ask questions of the medical students, and they participated in activities with medical robots.

The Advanced Topics in Biology course explores a number of medical topics, from communicable diseases, to trauma, to bioethics.  Many students in this class have a strong interest in the medical field. This visit offered them the opportunity to spend time in a hospital setting, gain hands-on experience with the same robotic models used by nursing and medical students and professionals, and learn more about careers in a variety of medical fields.  All of these activities reinforced and enhanced the in-class learning, discussions, and projects the students do throughout the semester.

Some questions and discussions with the medical students focused on the undergraduate coursework that was most beneficial for applying to medical school,

when and how a medical student chooses a specialty, and the most valuable and relevant medical school classes.

“It was neat to hear the dialogue between the medical students and nursing educators and our students,” said CCHS teacher Patrice Brock.  “The advice they gave our kids was very relevant - the value of good grades, job shadow experiences, and an open-minded exploration of the ever-increasing opportunities in the medical field.”
