Boys’ Basketball Conquers Start in Non-League Home Matchup, 67-52
The Central Catholic boys' basketball team bested Start, 67-52, on Tuesday in the Sullivan Center. With the double-digit home victory, CCHS improves to 10-7 on the season.
The Fighting Irish posted a decisive 7-3 edge from beyond the arc and a 14-7 advantage at the charity stripe vs. the Spartans, helping them win back-to-back games for the 1st time since January 9-14.
Junior Draden Wardrop paced the victorious Scarlet & Gray with a season-high 26 points on the strength of 4 treys. Wardrop's previous-best effort was 19 points vs. the University of Detroit Jesuit on January 24.
Sophomore Isaiah Mack-Russell was close behind Wardrop with 21 points. A 2023-24 Division II Honorable Mention All-Ohio honoree, Mack-Russell has now tallied at least 20 points on 6 occasions this season.
CCHS also benefited from 10 points by sophomore Cayden Kynard versus its crosstown opponent.
The trio of Connor Meikle, J'Siah Jefferson, and J'Kaih Jefferson led the visiting Spartans (10-7) with 11 points each.
Earlier in the evening, the CCHS freshmen team suffered a 44-40 home setback vs. Start, while the junior varsity squad dropped a 60-57 decision.
Central Catholic will return to the hardwood against De La Salle Collegiate on Saturday, February 12 in the CHSL Bishop Championship Tournament Quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m. at Marian High School. The Fighting Irish will battle the Pilots for the 2nd time in a little over a week. CCHS dropped a 71-63 decision vs. DLSC last Friday on the road.
