Boys’ Basketball Falls in Waning Seconds vs. University of Detroit Jesuit, 60-58

The Central Catholic boys’ basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 60-58 setback against University of Detroit Jesuit on Friday in the Sullivan Center.  With the home loss, the Fighting Irish fall to 8-4 overall, 3-2 in the Catholic High School League.

The Cubs’ (14-1) Omari Cannon converted a layup with less than 3 seconds remaining in regulation for the game-winning points.

The Fighting Irish trailed by 11 points, 50-39, heading into the final 8 minutes, but they outscored UDJ 19-10 in the final period to set the stage for a nail-biting finish.  Unfortunately for the Scarlet & Gray, UDJ’s Cannon scored his only points in the waning seconds to propel the visitors to the win.

Junior Draden Wardrop paced CCHS with 19 points, followed closely by sophomore Isaiah Mack-Russell with 17 points.

Central Catholic also received 8 points from sophomore Cayden Kynard and 6 points by junior Manny Johnson vs. Michigan’s top-ranked team.

David Herron III led the Cubs with a game-high 21 points, while University of Toledo commitment Leroy Blyden, Jr. had 20 points.

Earlier in the evening, the CCHS freshmen team secured a 53-40 victory vs. UDJ at home, while the junior varsity squad claimed a 62-34 triumph.

Central Catholic will return to the hardwood against Pickerington North this evening at approximately 5 p.m. at the Rossford Field House.   Tickets for the Hawk Invitational can be purchased by clicking HERE (bit.ly/4avItbL).
