Central Catholic Drama Club Students Present Fall Play

Members of Central Catholic’s newly re-formed Drama Club put on a 1-act play called The Clearing on November 17 at the Maumee Indoor Theater. The Clearing is a series of 10 short scenes performed as a one-act play that is sweet, witty, and poignant. The story takes place in early summer when groups of teenagers find themselves in a clearing in the woods.  Some are searching, some are hiding.  Some are lost and some are found.

“Our first performance as a new troupe could not have been more positive,” said Drama Club director Angela Mills. “I think that one of the most valuable parts of high school theater is building positive relationships with those around us while we work for a common goal, and the students involved in this production did this in such a tangible way. The kids were so supportive of one another from the very beginning. At the performance, the students harnessed their nervous energy in such a great way and told really honest stories through their scenes.

“The audience members had authentic reactions to the stories being told, which speaks volumes about the level of performance the students put on that evening. They really stepped out and engaged in something outside their comfort zones, and that's the most beautiful thing about educational theater - the opportunity for young people to find their voice.”

Congratulations to these Central Catholic students who were a part of The Clearing:

"I not only learned tips and strategies for acting for future reference, but I also learned the importance of community and friendship,” said junior Adeline Cromly of her experience. “I was not familiar with most of the cast at the beginning of our rehearsals, but I am now proud to call them friends. I found that our success not only stemmed from rehearsals and practice, but our support for each other. We never gave up on each other, and therefore, we never gave up on our performance. I enjoyed every second of the experience. It took a lot of energy, time, and practice, but it was completely worth it. I had so much fun being a part of the fall play."

“I am glad that I decided to step outside my comfort zone and audition for the play,” added senior Natalie Zuccarell. “I learned new skills like projecting and subtext, and I met many new and amazing people who all gave me great examples to study from.”

The CCHS Drama Club has been officially recognized as a chartered troupe through the International Thespian Society. This recognition provides resources to our students and to the troupe director, Angela Mills. It also serves as a sort of National Honor Society for theater so that students who put hours of excellent work into a production can be honored as a member of the International Thespian Society.
