Football Looks to Secure First Win vs. Benedictine on Saturday in Euclid

Central Catholic football team will look to secure its first win in 2021 when the Fighting Irish travel to Benedictine (1-0) on Saturday, Aug. 28. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm at Euclid Community Stadium.

CCHS (0-1) is coming off a season-opening setback vs. Lakewood St. Edward last Friday under the lights in Gallagher Stadium. The non-league matchup was tied 3-3 at halftime on Cherry Street, before the Eagles (1-0) reeled off 30-consecutive points to take control.

Senior RB Josh Watson scored Central Catholic’s lone touchdown on a terrific 25-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Watson finished with 77 yards rushing on 11 carries against the four-time Division I state champion Eagles.

Junior QB Ty’Waun Clark completed 14-of-22 passes for 117 yards in his first varsity start. Senior WR Khaleb Carter was Clark’s favorite target, reeling in nine catches for 42 yards.

The Bengals began their 2021 campaign with a 35-34 double-overtime road triumph vs. Walsh Jesuit on Friday. QB CeeJay Yarboro accounted for five scores against the Warriors in the opener, including four through the air.

Central Catholic and Benedictine will meet on the gridiron for the first time since 2015 and fourth time overall. The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 2-1.

CCHS claimed a 16-8 season-opening victory vs. the Bengals in the first matchup in 1962. The Scarlet & Gray ended that memorable season with a perfect 10-0 ledger and was named the United Press International (UPI) and Associated Press (AP) state champions.

Most recently, the schools squared off on two occasions in 2015. Benedictine escaped Gallagher Stadium with a 35-23 season-opening road victory before a national TV audience on ESPNU, before Central Catholic responded with a thrilling 31-30 double-overtime triumph in the state semifinals at Bellevue High School.
