Girls’ Basketball Manhandles Rival Whitmer on "Senior Night" at Home, 62-40
The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team took care of business against rival Whitmer on Thursday, tallying a convincing 62-40 victory in the Sullivan Center. With the double-digit home triumph on “Senior Night,” CCHS improves to 19-1 overall, 12-0 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.
Thursday’s win also sets the stage for tomorrow’s huge first-place showdown vs. TRAC foe Fremont Ross (16-3, 10-1 TRAC) on Cherry Street. Saturday’s matchup was originally scheduled for Jan. 24 but was postponed due to weather. Earlier this season, the Fighting Irish secured a 59-45 road victory vs. the Little Giants on Dec. 9.
Senior Brinn Hunt led a balanced Central Catholic attack with a game-high 17 points against the Panthers, followed closely by sophomore Brooklyn Vaughn with 15 points. Sophomore Corniya Clay also contributed 11 points in the impressive home victory, helping the Scarlet & Gray sweep the regular-season series against the Panthers. Back on Jan. 10, CCHS registered a 59-50 road triumph vs. Whitmer.
Jada Shoup led the Panthers with 13 points, while Denni Lawrence tallied 11 points.
Earlier in the evening, the CCHS junior varsity posted an impressive 36-21 triumph vs. Whitmer.
Central Catholic, which is ranked No. 7 in this week’s Associated Press Division II state poll, will conclude its home slate against Fremont Ross on Saturday, Feb. 12. The junior varsity game will begin at 4:15 pm in the Sullivan Center, followed by the varsity contest at 5:45 pm. Tickets are available at https://www.CentralCatholic.org/tickets.
