Football Opens 2022 Campaign at Reigning Division I State Champion Lakewood St. Edward on Friday

The Central Catholic football team will kick off its 2022 season this Friday, Aug. 19 at perennial power Lakewood St. Edward. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at First Federal Lakewood Stadium.

The Fighting Irish and Eagles will meet on the gridiron for the second-straight year. Last fall, CCHS dropped a 33-10 decision against St. Ed’s in its season opener in Gallagher Stadium. The game was tied 3-3 at halftime before the Eagles reeled off 30-consecutive points to take control.

The Scarlet & Gray will be led by senior captains – Braden Awls, Ty’Waun Clark, Cody Schuberg, and Braiden Vargas.

A season ago, the Fighting Irish finished with an 11-3 overall record, including a perfect 7-0 ledger in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. CCHS captured its fourth-consecutive league championship and advanced to the Region 6 Finals of the OHSAA Division II State Playoffs.

Lakewood St. Edward secured its fifth state title in school history in 2021, defeating Springfield, 23-13, in the Division I championship game at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.

Tickets for Friday’s non-conference matchup can be pre-purchased online at https://www.stedwardeagles.com/tickets. Reminder, no tickets will be available to purchase at the gate.

This fall will be Central Catholic’s last year in the TRAC. Beginning in the fall of 2023, CCHS will compete in the Catholic High School League (CHSL). The CHSL is the largest Catholic sports league in the U.S. with 27 private high schools located throughout southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio. Founded in 1926, it is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Detroit and governed by a board of directors comprised of principals and athletic directors from member schools.

For those fans unable to attend Friday’s opener, the game can be heard LIVE on The Ticket l 100.7 FM with the “Voice of the Irish” Bill Clark & Jim Oswald, starting at 6:30 pm or streamed online HERE.
