Football Comes Up Short vs. Lakewood St. Edward in Season Opener, 23-20

The Central Catholic football team suffered a tough 23-20 setback against reigning Division I state champion Lakewood St. Edward on Friday at First Federal Lakewood Stadium. With the season-opening loss, the Fighting Irish fall to 0-1 on the year.

The Scarlet & Gray went toe-to-toe with the Eagles (1-0), getting three touchdown passes from senior QB Ty’Waun Clark to classmate DB/WR Braden Awls. Clark and Awls connected on scoring passes covering seven, 30 and 24 yards, respectively.

CCHS looked like it had a chance to win Friday's non-conference matchup or force overtime in the waning moments, but an overturned call on an onside kick gave possession to St. Edward, and the Eagles ran out the clock.

Offensively, Clark completed 19-of-28 passes for 172 yards with three scores. Senior RB Chris Edmonds had 71 yards rushing on 23 rushes and classmate WR Durye'a Hall finished with a squad-best six receptions for 46 yards.

Central Catholic will return to the gridiron against Cleveland Benedictine on Friday, Aug. 26 at home. The opening kick against the Bengals is slated for 7 pm in Gallagher Stadium.
