Chico Johnson Signs National Letter of Intent with MVC Member Drake University

Central Catholic boys’ basketball player Chico Johnson was recognized for his success and commitment to continue his education and athletic career at the collegiate level this afternoon in front of family, friends, and teammates on campus. Johnson signed a National Letter of Intent with Drake University, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.

Johnson has been a varsity starter since his freshman year and has 801 career points. Last season, he averaged 15.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 blocked shots per game, shot 46% from the field (including 33% from 3-point range), and 78% from the free throw line.

A senior, Johnson was named 1st-team All-TRAC, 1st-team Division II All-Ohio, and Northwest Ohio District Player of the Year. He helped lead the Scarlet & Gray to its 2nd-straight district title.

Even though Johnson suffered a torn ACL to his left knee on June 11 and had surgery on July 7, ESPN has kept him ranked as Ohio’s No. 8 overall player in the Class of 2023. His dedication to rehab has put him ahead of schedule, and he hopes to return in early February.

The Fighting Irish tip off their 2022-23 campaign against Trotwood-Madison on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 6 pm. Their home opener will take place vs. rival St. Francis de Sales on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 pm in the newly remodeled Sullivan Center.
