Haney & Krompak Selected to Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame
Central Catholic High School alumnae Ericka Haney (Class of 1998) & Fran Krompak (Class of 1958) have been selected to the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. Haney will be honored for the Class of 2020, while Krompak will be inducted for the Class of 2021. This year’s ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 9 at the Ohio Regency in Columbus.
Haney, who is currently in her second year as head coach of the Fighting Irish girls’ basketball team, and Krompak will be the first two individuals from CCHS to be inducted into the OBHOF.
"It makes Central Catholic so proud to see Ericka & Coach Krompak get inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame,” said CCHS Director of Athletics Greg Dempsey. “We congratulate these two outstanding ladies and thank them for their contributions.”
During her outstanding career at Central Catholic, Haney was named the Metro City Player of the Year, twice earned first-team all-state honors, and was tabbed an Honorable Mention All-American by both USA Today and Street & Smith’s. She totaled 1,353 career points and 1,124 rebounds during her time on Cherry Street, both school records.
As a senior, Haney averaged 16.0 ppg and 11.8 rpg while leading the Scarlet & Gray to a 25-2 record and a trip to the “Final Four.”
In addition to excelling on the hardwood, Haney guided the CCHS volleyball team to an appearance in the state semifinals, and also was an All-American in track & field. She was the City League champion four straight years in the 100 hurdles and the 200, and in her junior and senior years added CL titles in the 400 and the high jump.
After graduating from CCHS, Haney played for legendary head coach Muffet McGraw at the University of Notre Dame. She played a key role in the Fighting Irish capturing their first national championship in program history in 2001. Haney averaged 7.6 ppg and 4.6 rpg in her UND career, and at the time graduated fifth in school history with 129 career games played.
Haney was drafted by the Detroit Shock in the third round (47th pick) of the WNBA in 2002 and had a stint overseas in Sweden later that year. She then returned to the states and turned her focus to coaching and was part of the staffs at Chicago State (2003-06), Louisiana Tech (2006-07), Florida Gulf Coast (2007-09) and The Ohio State (2017-20). In addition to her time at the collegiate level, she left the college game for eight years to serve as a director of girls’ basketball at four different Florida high schools (2009-17).
“I’m humbled to be included in a group of such amazing and talented individuals,” said Haney, who was named to the Central Catholic Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. “This recognition is such a high honor for me, as Ohio is loaded with talent across all sports. Not to mention, I’m a fan of many of the athletes that have preceded me in this honor.”
Added Dempsey, “Ericka's accomplishments in the sport of basketball are second to none. She showed everyone that when you combine talent with hard work and tenacity, there are no limits. She now is back home, instilling those same values that she had during her playing days.”
Krompak was a pioneer for girls’ basketball across the state and served as head coach of her alma mater from 1969-80. She produced a 140-25 record in 11 years on the bench, guiding the Fighting Irish to eight City League titles. She also coached tennis, volleyball and cheerleading during her time at CCHS. In 1977, Krompak led both girls’ basketball and volleyball to a regional championship and an appearance at the “Final Four.”
Krompak, who was first women to be inducted into the CCHS Athletics Hall of Fame in 1987, is also a member of the District 7 Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and the City League Hall of Fame.
“I’m so humbled by this honor,” said Krompak, who worked 42 years at CCHS. “I’m really thrilled for all of my former players. It is become of them that I’m getting this recognition. I can’t thank them enough.”
Added Dempsey, “Coach Krompak was a trailblazer in women's athletics, not only for Central Catholic and the city of Toledo, but for the entire state. And her impact on sports has a never-ending impact.”
Haney & Krompak will join an exclusive group of basketball legends in the hall of fame, including Toledo’s own Jimmy Jackson, Jerry Lucas, Oscar Robertson, Clark Kellogg, John Havlicek, University of Toledo great Bob Nichols, Bob Huggins and Bobby Knight, to name a few.
