Football Blanks Saint Ignatius in Non-Conference Finale, 28-0
The Central Catholic football team blanked perennial power Saint Ignatius, 28-0, in Friday’s Homecoming game in Gallagher Stadium. With the shutout victory, CCHS improves to 6-0 overall.
The Fighting Irish benefitted from 2 TDs in each half to help them stretch their winning streak to 21-consecutive games.
Senior RB Marquan Braswell ran for a season-high 182 yards on 21 carries for the Scarlet & Gray, including an 8-yard TD. Braswell, who topped the century mark for the 4th time this fall, surpassed his previous-best effort of 156 yards on the ground vs. Detroit Catholic Central on Sept. 1.
Senior DB Jayden Barnes also tallied a 52-yard interception return for a TD in the 2nd half, while senior WR Jaylen Watson recorded a 3-yard TD pass to senior QB Terry Collins Jr. on a trick play to close out the scoring.
Friday’s matchup showcased 2 of the most-storied programs in state history. The Scarlet & Gray (1962, 2005, ’12, ’14, ’22) has won 5 state championships on the gridiron, while the Wildcats (1988, ‘89, ‘91, ‘92, ‘93, ‘94, ‘95, ‘99, 2001, ‘08, ‘11) have secured 11 titles, 2nd-most in the state record book.
The Fighting Irish will return to the field against arch-rival St. John’s Jesuit on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. at Lyden Field. A season ago, the Fighting Irish defeated SJJ, 28-7, at home to register their 8th-straight victory in the series. Central Catholic’s last loss in the series occurred on Oct. 27, 2017, when it suffered a 13-6 road setback. Tickets are currently available for purchase online at bit.ly/3PKFfIV.
