Football Closes Out Regular Season at Unbeaten Mona Shores on Friday

The Central Catholic football team will close out its regular season at Mona Shores on Friday, October 25.  The opening kick against the unbeaten Sailors (8-0, 5-0 OKC) is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sailor Stadium.

CCHS (8-1, 5-1 CHSL), which is ranked No. 3 in this week’s Associated Press Division III state poll, is coming off a 28-7 victory against St. Francis de Sales at the Glass Bowl Stadium on the campus of the University of Toledo.

The 2-time defending state champions scored 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to help them secure their 23rd-straight win vs. the arch-rival Knights (6-3, 4-2 CHSL).  The Fighting Irish was also aided by 2 interceptions in the final 12 minutes, as they successfully retained the coveted Irish-Knight Trophy.  CCHS has not lost to its rival since 2003.

Senior RB Tyler Morgan rushed for a team-high 92 yards vs. SFDS, while sophomore QB Ali Beydoun came off the bench and completed 5-of-8 passes for 95 yards and 2 TDs.  Junior WR Sharard Vaughn III was Beydoun’s favorite target, finishing with 3 catches for 86 yards.  On the 1st play of the 4th period, Vaughn hauled in a 22-yard TD strike from Beydoun to give Central Catholic a lead it would not give up.

Overall this fall, Morgan has accumulated a squad-best 961 yards rushing on 170 carries (5.7 ypg) and 11 TDs.  Through the air, senior QB Isaiah Fox has completed 76-of-111 passes (68.5%) for 1,179 yards and 10 TDs.  Fox and Beydoun have done a good job spreading the wealth to the wide receivers, as 4 players have caught at least 19 passes.  Junior Preston Fryzel leads the way with 28 receptions for 453 yards and 4 scores, followed closely by Vaughn, senior Levelle Stokes III, and junior Jerome Davis V with 22, 21, and 19 catches, respectively.

Mona Shores enters Friday’s action on the heels of a 40-0 shutout win vs. Reeths-Puffer on the road.  The Sailors have allowed 7 points or less in each of their last 3 games and on 5 occasions overall this fall.

Mona Shore is a member of the Ottawa-Kent Conference, and it has won a pair of state titles on the gridiron in 2019 and 2020.  The Fighting Irish will square off against the Sailors for the 1st time.
