Scally Brothers Bring Music to Worship Wednesday
Each Worship Wednesday, the Central Catholic student body gathers for an all-school Mass or adoration service. Since August 2023, Jacob Scally ’17 and Zachary Scally ’20 have been providing the music for these services, and they are thrilled to be back home worshiping with their CCHS family.
Jake and Zach have been performing together as the Scally Brothers since April 2012, playing Contemporary Christian music with a blend of Christian pop, rock, and worship. Jake has been playing guitar since first grade, but he really became interested in seventh grade when they started the band. He now plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and piano, and he is the band’s lead singer. Zach started playing drums when he was seven. He now plays drums and other percussion in the band and does background vocals.
Their 1st performance as the Scally Brothers was at their home parish, Blessed Sacrament, in June 2012. They went on to play all over the country at different youth conferences, churches, camps, and festivals. This fall, they kicked off their tour in southern Ohio, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. After those events, they headed further west to Idaho and Utah. They recently released their first studio album, Keep Hopin' // Keep Dreamin'.
“Music has been an incredible gift to help strengthen my faith and bring glory to God, leading worship all over the country,” Zach said.
Jake typically handles more of the creative aspects of the band, and Zach focuses on the business side. Being an independent duo, they do all their own songwriting, management, and booking. Jake does the majority of social media, merchandise, songwriting, and designing, while Zach handles booking, planning the logistics of each show, communication for events, and the finances. They help each other out but do their best to divide the work evenly.
They have several session musicians that fly out for specific shows, along with their sound engineer to mix. But mainly it is just the two brothers performing on stage.
During his time as a student at Central Catholic, Jake participated in student government, campus ministry, basketball, tennis, and golf, and he was a member of the National Honor Society. He went to the University of Toledo and earned a degree in math education.
Zach played music at school Masses and was an altar server and retreat leader at CCHS. He also participated in the Luken T. Boyle Campaign for Kindness and the National Honor Society, and he played soccer, basketball, and tennis. He studied finance at the University of Toledo and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
In 2022, Central Catholic was looking for a musician to fill in at school Mass and adoration, and the campus minister reached out to the Scally Brothers to see if they were available. They began helping occasionally, and they immediately felt such a connection with the students and staff. The brothers eventually became full time worship leaders at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year.
“It has been such a joy to be back home every Wednesday to worship with the whole CCHS family!” said Jake. “It is simply a blessing. We both loved our time at CCHS as students! There is something so special about Central Catholic and it is such an honor to be back. It is home, and to have the opportunity to lead the whole school in such a powerful worship experience each week is a gift. We are there ultimately to help the students and staff grow in their faith and become closer to Christ. Whatever we do, we want God to get the glory from it. That was our mission back in 2012 and it still remains true today.
“Our favorite part is hearing the kids sing with one booming voice to ‘King of Kings.’ That is something that will never get old. At a public school, you don’t have the opportunity to come together like we do at CCHS for Worship Wednesdays. Even some Catholic high schools will only gather once a month or a few times a year. CCHS is unique and that makes the school so special. It’s the people, the relationships, and most importantly our faith. It is evident that Central Catholic cares deeply about their students, and it is a joy to be present each week as we gather together!”
