CCHS, which is picked to successfully defend its Central Division championship in the CHSL, is currently riding a 21-game home winning streak, dating back to the start of the 2021 campaign.
The Scarlet & Gray (2-1, 0-1 CHSL) will be looking to bounce back from a 21-7 loss against Detroit Catholic Central at Fr. Richard Elmer Stadium to snap its 33-game winning streak. CCHS’s most recent setback was 23-20 at Lakewood St. Edward on August 19, 2022.
Central Catholic’s lone score came on a 70-yard TD pass from sophomore QB Ali Beydoun to junior WR Sharard Vaughn III to open the 2nd half. Unfortunately for the 2-time reigning state champions, the Shamrocks (2-0, 1-0 CHSL) immediately answered with their own scoring drive to make it a 2-score difference and halt any momentum CCHS had established.
Beydoun, who replaced injured senior QB Isaiah Fox, completed 10 of 26 passes for 174 yards and 1 TD against DCC.
Overall this fall, the 2-headed monster of senior RB Tyler Morgan and junior RB Anthony Sylvester have tallied 393 and 202 rushing yards, respectively. Sylvester has also registered 5 TDs, followed closely by Morgan with 3 scores. Fox has completed 30-of-42 passes (71.4 percent) for 394 yards and 2 TDs. Fox’s favorite targets have been junior WR Preston Fryzel (13 catches, 163) and Vaughn III (9 receptions, 141 yards).
Brother Rice, which was picked 6th in the CHSL Central Division Preseason Coaches’ Poll, suffered a 49-28 loss vs. St. Francis de Sales in the Glass Bowl.
CCHS and Brother Rice will square off on the gridiron for the 2nd-straight fall. A year ago, Central Catholic secured a 33-7 triumph vs. the Warriors at Blue Devils Stadium on the campus of Lawrence Tech University. 2023 1st-team All-Ohio RB Marquan Braswell found the end zone on 4 occasions to fuel the offense. QB Terry Collins, Jr. also completed 6-of-11 passes for 172 yards and 1 TD, connecting with WR Jaylen Watson on a 60-yard TD pass on the game’s 1st offensive play.
Central Catholic will return to the field against De La Salle Collegiate (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 20. The opening kick against the Pilots is slated for 7 p.m. at Tom Adams Field on the campus of Wayne State University.
Last fall, CCHS registered a hard-fought 28-23 victory vs DLSC at home. The Fighting Irish received 2 TDs each from the backfield duo of Braswell and senior RB Tyler Morgan. Braswell, who finished with a game-high 146 yards on 27 carries, recorded scoring runs covering 10 and 15 yards, while Morgan found on the end zone on scampers of 9 and 3 yards, respectively.
In addition to a strong ground game, Collins completed an efficient 10-of-12 passes for 145 yards. His favorite target was Watson, who finished with 6 catches for 102 yards.
