Football Looks to Earn First Victory vs. Benedictine in Friday’s Home Opener

The Central Catholic football team will look to earn its first victory in 2022 when the Fighting Irish host Benedictine (0-1) on Friday, Aug. 26. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm in Gallagher Stadium. Friday’s home opener has been designated as the “BCSN Game of the Week” and will feature “GameDay Tailgate.”

CCHS (0-1) is coming off a hard-fought 23-20 season-opening setback at reigning Division I state champion Lakewood St. Edward on Aug. 19 at First Federal Lakewood Stadium.

The Fighting Irish went toe-to-toe with the Eagles (1-0), getting three touchdown passes from senior QB Ty’Waun Clark to classmate DB/WR Braden Awls. Clark and Awls connected on scoring passes covering seven, 30 and 24 yards, respectively.

CCHS looked like it had a chance to win or force overtime in the waning moments of this past Friday’s season opener, but an overturned call on an onside kick gave possession to LSE, and the Eagles ran out the clock.

Offensively, Clark completed 19-of-28 passes for 172 yards with three scores. Senior RB Chris Edmonds had 71 yards rushing on 23 carries, and classmate WR Durye’a Hall finished with a squad-best six receptions for 46 yards.

The Bengals began their 2022 campaign with a 38-32 double-overtime loss vs. Walsh Jesuit on Friday at home.

Central Catholic and Benedictine will meet on the gridiron for the second straight year and fifth time overall. The all-time series is tied at 2-2.

Last fall, CCHS sustained a 24-14 setback against Benedictine under the lights at Euclid Community Stadium. Clark accounted for both Central Catholic scores in the non-league matchup. The 2022 team captain recorded a 1-yard TD plunge in the opening period and was credited with an 8-yard TD pass to former Fighting Irish WR Sam Lee in the final quarter. For the game, Clark completed 11 of 19 passes for 119 yards.

Tickets for Friday’s home opener can be purchased online at CentralCatholic.org/tickets. Friendly reminder, no tickets will be available to purchase at the gate.

For those fans unable to attend Friday’s contest, the game can be heard LIVE on “The Ticket” l 100.7 FM with the “Voice of the Irish” Bill Clark & Jim Oswald, starting at 6:30 pm or streamed online HERE.
