Football Renews Postseason Rivalry with Avon in Regional Finals of Division II State Playoffs

The Central Catholic football team will renew its postseason rivalry with Avon on Friday, Nov. 18 in the Regional Finals of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division II State Playoffs. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm at Perkins High Football Stadium (3714 Campbell Street, Sandusky, 44870). The contest will be televised on BCSN NOW APP and streamed live on OHSAA.tv.

The Fighting Irish (12-1) are the No. 3 seed in Region 6, while the Eagles (12-1) are the No. 1 seed.

The 2 teams will meet in the Region Finals for the 2nd-straight year and 5th time overall in the postseason. Last fall, CCHS lost 43-42 to the Eagles on a 2-point conversion in overtime. The squads also clashed during the 2011, 2012, and 2018 playoffs, with Central Catholic claiming a 42-14 triumph during its state championship run in 2012, while Avon secured a 49-28 win in 2011 and a 37-22 victory in 2018.

Central Catholic advanced to the regional finals after an impressive 42-6 victory against No. 2 seed Medina Highland (12-1) on Friday at Perkins High Football Stadium.

The Scarlet & Gray scored touchdowns on its 1st 6 possessions to blow the game open early against the previously unbeaten Hornets. CCHS finished with a commanding 381-172 advantage in total offense.

Senior QB Ty’Waun Clark ignited the high-powered Central Catholic offense with 3 touchdowns. Clark was credited with 40- and 38-yard scoring runs, as well as a 43-yard TD strike to senior WR Durye'a Hall. He completed 10-of-13 passes for 165 yards and 1 TD. The 2022 honorable mention All-TRAC honoree also tallied a game-high 88 yards rushing with those 2 scores.

Senior RB Chris Edmonds also had a solid game on the ground for the victorious Fighting Irish, tallying 86 yards on 20 carries with 1 score. The 2022 TRAC Offensive Player of the Year found the end zone on a 1-yard TD plunge in the 2nd period.

CCHS finished the game converting a near perfect 9-of-11 on 3rd down, while the Hornets were 0-of-7.

A member of the Southwestern League, Avon enters Friday’s post-season matchup on a roll, registering postseason wins against No. 16 seed Westlake, 49-0, No. 9 seed North Royalton, 35-14, and most recently No. 5 seed Olmsted Falls, 45-7.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Mike Elder, the Eagles are making their 14th-straight appearance in the state playoffs and 16th overall. Avon is looking to secure its 6th-consecutive trip to the state “Final Four.”

Tickets for Friday’s post-season contest MUST be pre-purchased online at OHSAA.org/tickets (Division II, Region 6). Reminder, no tickets will be available to purchase at the gate. All playoff tickets are General Admission. Presale tickets will cost $10 for adults and $8 for students.
