Football Sustains 43-42 Overtime Loss vs. Avon in Regional Finals of State Playoffs

The Central Catholic football team suffered a heartbreaking 43-42 overtime loss against seventh-ranked Avon this evening in the Region 6 Finals of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division II State Playoffs at Strobel Field at Sandusky High School.

The No. 2 seed Eagles (12-2) converted a two-point conversion on a reverse in the extra period to end the season for the No. 4 seed Fighting Irish (11-3). Avon's QB Sam DeTillio handed the ball off to Jakorion Caffey on what looked to be a sweep to the right. Caffey then pitched it to Ethan Holbrook heading left, and Holbrook went into the endzone for the game-winning points.

Central Catholic had the first possession in overtime, and junior QB Ty'Waun Clark hit senior WR Sam Lee on a 5-yard TD pass. Senior PK Cole Tishler's extra-point kick was good, and the Scarlet & Gray led for the first time in the neutral-site game, 42-35.

Avon then faced a 4th-and-9 from the 19-yard line on its OT possession when DeTillio converted an 18-yard pass to set up a TD sneak and the game-winning two-point conversion.

Offensively for CCHS, junior RB Chris Edmonds carried the ball 38 times for a whopping 286 yards and three TDs. Clark also completed 17-of-24 passes for 210 yards, and Sam Lee caught a squad-best seven passes for 105 yards and three touchdowns.

As a team, Central Catholic finished with a slight 525-510 edge in total offense.

Tonight's game marked the final contest for CCHS's 16-member senior class - Mar'tieon Adams, Malon Barbour, Rayshaun Brown, Khaleb Carter, Dylan Fisher, Chris Jackson, Josh Lee, Sam Lee, Maurice Parker, Peyton Reasonover, Brent Rombach, Jace Sanchez, Cole Tishler, Damajea Warren, Josh Watson, Desmond Yarger.
