Football Travels to St. Mary’s Preparatory for Crucial CHSL Matchup

The Central Catholic football team will travel to St. Mary’s Preparatory (2-4, 2-2 CHSL) on Friday, Oct. 6 for an important Catholic League High School game. The opening kick against the Eaglets is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Milewski Field and Friday’s matchup will be streamed LIVE on The PreP.

Tickets for Friday’s CHSL game can be purchased for CASH ONLY at the gate for $7. For those fans unable to attend the contest, the game can be heard on “The Ticket” l 100.7 FM with the “Voice of the Irish” Bill Clark & Jim Oswald, starting at 6:30 p.m. or streamed online HERE.

The Fighting Irish (7-0, 4-0 CHSL) currently hold the top spot in the Central Division standings, 1 game ahead of De La Salle Collegiate (5-1, 3-1 CHSL). Back on Sept. 15, the Scarlet & Gray registered a 28-23 home victory vs. the Pilots. With a win against OLSM on Friday, CCHS would secure a spot in the Prep Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Friday’s divisional showdown will feature 2 of the most successful programs in the CHSL. The Fighting Irish (1962, 2005, ’12, ’14, ’22) have won 5 state championships on the gridiron, while St. Mary’s Prep (1977, ‘94, ‘99, 2000, ‘11, ‘14, ‘15, ’16) has captured 8 titles.

CCHS, which is ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Ohio Division III state poll, is coming off a 35-7 road win against rival St. John’s Jesuit (3-4, 2-2 CHSL) to extend its winning streak to 22-consecutive games. The Fighting Irish held a slim 13-7 lead at intermission before outscoring the Titans 21-0 in the 2nd half to register their 9th-straight triumph in the series.

Senior RB Marquan Braswell was a workhorse for CCHS against its crosstown rival, finishing with 174 yards and 4 TDs on 20 carries. Braswell topped the century mark for the 5th time this fall, and the team captain is averaging 170.7 yards over the last 3 games.

Overall this fall, Braswell has accumulated a squad-best 919 yards rushing on 129 carries (7.1 ypg) and 15 TDs, senior QB Terry Collins, Jr. has completed 62-of-93 passes (66.7%) for 856 yards and 4 TDs, and senior WR Jaylen Watson has hauled in a team-high 36 catches for 480 yards and 2 scores.

OLSM enters Friday’s action on the heels of a 35-7 road loss vs. River Rouge in non-conference play.

Central Catholic will return to the field against arch-rival St. Francis de Sales on Friday, Oct. 13 in its regular-season home finale. The opening kick against the Knights (1-6, 1-4 CHSL) is slated for 7 p.m. In Gallagher Stadium. Tickets for next Friday’s game can be purchased online at bit.ly/3ejjhky.

Prior to kickoff, CCHS will honor 36 seniors from the fall sports of football, marching band, cheerleading, boys’ cross country, girls’ cross country, and girls’ tennis.
