Girls’ Basketball Defeats Fremont Ross to Capture TRAC Championship, 47-33
The Central Catholic girls’ basketball flexed its muscles on Saturday in the Sullivan Center, defeating Fremont Ross 47-33 to secure the Three Rivers Athletic Conference championship. With the double-digit triumph in its home finale, CCHS improves to 20-1 overall, 13-0 in the league.
This was the Fighting Irish’s first outright TRAC title in girls’ basketball, and its first since sharing TRAC championships with Notre Dame in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
Sophomore Corniya Clay led a balanced CCHS attack with 13 points against the Little Giants, followed closely by classmate Brooklyn Vaughn with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while classmate Emily Baer added nine points.
In addition, senior Brinn Hunt contributed seven points and seven boards for the victorious Fighting Irish, helping them sweep the regular-season series against the Little Giants. Back on Dec. 9, the Scarlet & Gray registered a 59-45 victory at Fremont Ross.
Carma Johnson paced the Little Giants (17-4, 11-2 TRAC) with 13 points, while Janiah Holmes contributed 10 points and nine caroms.
Central Catholic, which is ranked No. 7 in this week’s Associated Press Division II state poll, will conclude its regular season against TRAC rival Notre Dame on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The junior varsity game will begin at 6 pm at NDA, followed by the varsity contest at 7:30 pm.
