Girls’ Basketball Falls Short vs. Father Gabriel Richard in CHSL Championship Game, 61-47

The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team suffered a 61-47 loss against Father Gabriel Richard on Saturday in the Catholic High School League Central Division Championship Game in Calihan Hall on the campus of the University of Detroit Jesuit. With the neutral-court setback, CCHS falls to 15-7 on the season.

The Scarlet & Gray went toe-to-toe with the state of Michigan’s top-ranked Division 1 team, but in the end came up a little short, snapping its 5-game winning streak.

Central Catholic was led by senior Brooklyn Vaughn with 17 points and a game-high 15 rebounds to post her squad-best 11th double-double this year, while classmate Corniya Clay also had 17 points.

Fellow senior Sophia Farrugia added 10 points and 10 boards.

Vanessa Rodriguez paced unbeaten FGR (20-0) with a game-high 29 points, knocking down a contest-best 5 treys.

Her twin sister, Ava Rodriguez, added 11 points, followed closely by Charlotte Miller and Cora Williams with 10 points apiece.

The Fighting Irish will return to the hardwood against Lake in the 1st round of the OHSAA Division II Northwest 2 District – Old Fort of the OHSAA State Tournament on Tuesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. in the Sullivan Center. Tickets are currently available at bit.ly/3GUM8lG.  If CCHS defeats the Flyers, they will compete vs. the winner of No. 15 seed Rossford vs. No. 3 seed Shelby on Saturday, February 24 at 7 p.m.
