Girls’ Basketball Routs Clay on Road, 65-22
The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team routed Clay, 65-22, on Monday in the Potter Field House. With the dominating road win, CCHS improves to 17-2 overall, 11-1 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference. They also remain in 1st place in the TRAC standings with only 2 league games remaining.
Senior Mary Ellis paced the visiting Fighting Irish with a season-high 17 points.
Junior Corniya Clay added 13 points for the victorious Scarlet & Gray, followed closely by senior Jai’Lynne Hitt-Swartz and junior Brooklyn Vaughn each with 12 points.
Julia Derrer led the Eagles with 8 points.
Along with Monday’s triumph, CCHS swept the regular-season series vs. Clay. Back on Dec. 15, Central Catholic defeated the Eagles, 62-32, at home.
Earlier in the evening, the CCHS freshman team secured a 30-26 victory against Clay, while the junior varsity squad suffered a 30-28 road loss.
Ranked No. 2 in Division II state poll for the 3rd-straight week, Central Catholic returns to the hardwood against rival Notre Dame Academy on Thursday, Feb. 2. The opening tip versus the Eagles is scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Sullivan Center. Tickets for Thursday’s “Senior Night” matchup MUST be pre-purchased online at bit.ly/3EjJhky. The Fighting Irish will honor seniors Jada Dames, Mary Ellis, Jai’Lynne Hitt-Swartz, JaNyah Johnson, and Grace Merchant following the conclusion of the junior varsity contest. Back on Jan. 5, CCHS defeated NDA, 59-52, on the road.
