Marquan Braswell, Michael Cannings II, Marc Nave, & Elijah Williams Named 2023 Football Team Captains

Senior RB Marquan Braswell, senior DL Michael Cannings II, senior OL Marc Nave, and senior OL Elijah Willams have been named captains for the Central Catholic football team, 24th-year head coach Greg Dempsey recently announced. The quartet was selected based on votes by their teammates.

Last fall, Braswell rushed for 508 yards on 54 carries (9.4 ypc) and scored 6 touchdowns, en route to earning honorable mention All-TRAC accolades.

Cannings collected 1st-team All-Ohio laurels in 2022. He was part of a defensive that gave up only 11.9 points per game and forced 25 turnovers (16 interceptions, 9 fumbles).

Offensively, Nave earned 2nd-team all-state accolades, while Williams garnered 2nd-team all-conference recognition. This duo spearheaded a group that averaged 378.5 yards and 40.4 points per contest.

The Fighting Irish are coming off a historic 2022 campaign that saw them capture their 5th OHSAA state championship in program history (1962, 2005, ‘12, ‘14, ‘22).  They finished with a 15-1 overall ledger and a perfect 7-0 mark in the now-defunct Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC).

Central Catholic begins its fall campaign against Findlay this Friday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at JC Donnell Memorial Stadium. CCHS has been picked to win the Central Division in the Catholic High School League (CHSL) in its 1st season in a vote by the conference’s head coaches. They are tabbed to finish 1st in the 7-team division.
