10 Track & Field Runners Qualify for Division II State Championship

The Central Catholic girls’ and boys’ track & field teams took part in the Division II Regional Championship on Thursday and Saturday at Lexington High School. 

A total of 10 CCHS student-athletes finished in the Top 4 in an event and have qualified for the 115th-annual Boys’ and 48th-annual Girls’ Ohio High School Athletic Association Track & Field State Championship. The 2-day Division II meet will take place Friday-Saturday, June 2-3 at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University.

The Fighting Irish girls’ squad finished 2nd at the Region 6 meet, while the boys’ team placed 7th. Huron was the girls’ team champion with 66 points, just 1 point ahead of CCHS, while Sandusky Perkins captured the boys’ team title with 50 points.

On the boys’ side, senior Solomon King broke the state record in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 10.48 seconds. He also placed 2nd in the 200-meter dash in 21.97. In addition, King ran the opening leg in both the victorious 4x100-meter relay (42.75) and 4x200-meter relay (1:28.21).

King was joined by senior Donovan Hooker and senior RJ Maddox Jr. in the 2 winning relays. Freshman Ian Smith was the 4th member of the 4x100-meter relay, while sophomore Jacob Spears ran the 3rd leg of the 4x200-meter relay.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Nyla King placed 2nd in both the 100-meter dash (12.30) and 200-meter dash (25.21). She also sprinted a leg in the victorious 4x100-meter relay (48.57) and 4x200-meter relay (1:42.59).

In other individual events, senior Mary Ellis placed 2nd in the 400-meter dash (57.12), senior Jayla Watson finished 3rd in the 300-meter hurdles (46.15), and junior Taylor Scribner crossed the finish line 4th in the 100-meter dash (12.47).

In the relay’s, the duo of junior Jara Johnson and Scribner were part of all 3 state qualifying teams. King and Watson also competed in the 4x100, King and Ellis were sprinters in the 4x200, while Ellis and Watson competed in the 4x400, respectively.
