Baseball Falls Short vs. State Ranked Defiance in District Final in Extra Innings, 2-1

The Central Catholic baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 extra-inning setback against state ranked Defiance on Saturday in the Division II District Final at Memorial Park in Archbold. With the tough loss, the No. 2 seed Fighting Irish fall to 14-11.

The No. 1 seeded Bulldogs’ Christian Conley delivered a walk-off RBI single with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th frame off CCHS senior RHP Brian Bishop.

The Scarlet & Gray tied the game at 1-1 in the 7th inning after senior Cody Markus scored on a passed ball to force extra baseball.  

Senior RHP Winston Delp drew the start on the mound for Central Catholic, which appeared in the District Final for the 2nd time in the last 3 seasons. Delp allowed only 1 run on 3 hits in 5.2 innings.

Defiance, the No. 4-ranked team in the final Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Division II poll, improved to 26-4 overall.

Saturday’s game marked the final contest for CCHS’s 10-member senior class – Brian Bishop, Winston Delp, Grant Haupricht, Cody Markus, Gus Mehling, James Ridley Jr., Ayden Tanhueco, Grant Tefft, Bryce Wagner, and Brandon Wells.
