Boys’ Basketball Comes From Behind to Defeat Arch-Rival St. John’s Jesuit at Home, 49-45
The Central Catholic boys’ basketball team grinded out a 49-45 come-from-behind victory against arch-rival St. John’s Jesuit on Friday in the Sullivan Center. With the home win, CCHS improves to 15-2 overall, 8-2 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference.
The Fighting Irish, ranked No. 4 in this week’s Associated Press Division II state poll, outscored the Titans 18-11 in the pivotal fourth quarter to stretch their winning streak to a season-high six-straight games.
Senior Sam Lee paced host CCHS with 15 points, all in the second half, while junior Chico Johnson contributed 11.
CJ Hornbeak led the visiting Titans (10-6, 5-5 TRAC) with a game-high 19 points, followed by Kennedy Vaughn with 11.
Along with Friday’s win, the Scarlet & Gray swept the regular-season series vs. SJJ, claiming a 53-45 road victory on Dec. 17.
Earlier in the evening, the CCHS freshman team tallied a 41-19 victory against the Titans, while the junior varsity squad suffered a close 42-39 setback.
Central Catholic will return to the hardwood against TRAC rival Findlay on Tuesday, Feb. 1. Freshman will begin the action at 4:45 pm versus the Trojans in the FHS Gymnasium, followed by the junior varsity and varsity at 6 pm and 7:30 pm, respectively.
