Boys’ Basketball Drops Season Opener at Division II State Champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 68-36

The Central Catholic boys’ basketball team suffered a 68-36 setback against reigning Division II state champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary on Saturday in the East vs. West Basketball Classic in LeBron James Arena. With the season-opening loss, the Fighting Irish fall to 0-1 on the season.

CCHS trailed SVSM by only 1 point after the opening 8 minutes, 12-11. Unfortunately for the Scarlet & Gray, they were outscored 15-5 in the pivotal 2nd quarter, digging themselves a deficit they could not recover from.  

Senior Kechan Johnson Jr. paced Central Catholic with a game-high 13 points, while sophomore Makhi Leach had 11.

Lance Hayes led the Fighting Irish with 11 points, followed closely by Darius Stratford and Kevin Hamilton Jr. with 10 and 9 points, respectively.


Central Catholic returns to the hardwood against arch-rival St. John’s Jesuit on Friday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 pm in the newly remodeled Sullivan Center.
