Central Catholic Hires Troy Zabawa as Girls’ Volleyball Coach

Troy Zabawa has been named the head girls’ volleyball coach at Central Catholic High School, Director of Athletics Greg Dempsey recently announced.

“We are very excited to get a new head coach that possesses Troy's experience and passion for volleyball,” Dempsey said.  “He brings great energy, passion, and knowledge to our program.  We’re excited for the future of Central Catholic volleyball under Troy’s guidance.” 

Zabawa (pronounced zuh-BOW-wuh) brings almost 10 years of coaching experience at various clubs and high schools to Cherry Street.

He is currently the Toledo Dynamic Volleyball Club coach (2020-Present), working with 12U Elite (2020-Pres.), 14U National (2021-Pres.), 16U Elite (2022-Pres.), and 17U Elite (2023-Pres.) student-athletes.

"I’m extremely excited and blessed to be given the opportunity to take over the Irish volleyball program,” Zabawa said. “I look forward to changing the culture and bringing back a sense of pride, tradition, and a winning atmosphere." 

Along with working at TDVC, Zabawa coached the last 5 years at Evergreen High School, spending 3 years at junior varsity (2019-21) and 2 years at varsity (2022-23) for the Vikings.

Zabawa began his coaching career at Lial Catholic School with 8th grade (2014-16).  He went on to become the volleyball coach at Glass City Athletics (2016-19), working with junior high school student-athletes in house leagues and coaching the 15U travel team. He also spent time providing private lessons.

In addition to working at Glass City Athletics, Zabawa coached 2 years at Start High School. He spent 1 year each at 8th grade (2017) and with freshmen (2018).

Zabawa, who attended Monroe County Community College and The University of Toledo, has worked 20-plus years as a plant operator for the city of Monroe at their Wastewater Facility.  He and his wife Cindy have 4 children: Emily (30), Alyssa (28), Vaughn (15), and Josie (11).
