The Central Catholic High School music department will present its 95th consecutive spring musical production, Freaky Friday, on May 3, 4, and 5 at the Valentine Theatre.  Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Freaky Friday is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).  All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. Based on the novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, the musical is the story of an overworked mother and her teenage daughter who magically swap bodies, and they have just one day to put things right again.  As they experience each other's lives from a new perspective, they must work together to solve the mystery of how to break the spell.

Angela Mills, Central Catholic English teacher and Drama Club moderator, is the director of the musical.  The core production team also includes Karin Giffin (vocal director), Nikki Toland ’08 (choreographer and current CCHS teacher and dance coach), Kathy Brassell ’76 (costumer), and Lane Hakel (set builder).

“The students are working hard on every front as we get down to the last few weeks of rehearsals,” said Mills.  “Freaky Friday: The Musical is a fresh, fun, contemporary take on a story that is familiar to so many.  Whether it was the original book published in 1972 or either of the movie adaptations in 1995 and 2003, so many have enjoyed this timeless story of a teenager and a mom taking a walk in each other's shoes as they learn that despite their differences, they love each other ‘Today and Every Day!’  This funny and heartwarming show is perfect to see leading up to Mother's Day.”

Senior Sophia Farrugia plays the role of Katherine Blake, the mother in the story who is stressed by parenting a difficult teenage daughter while trying to run her own business.  Sophia said, “I wanted to be in the musical because Central Catholic has always been an important part of my life and I love the Glee Club!  Growing up, the musicals were always something I looked forward to, and getting to be a part of them is an amazing experience.  I am excited for everyone to see the show because it’s a contemporary musical that features lots of catchy songs, a strong and dynamic ensemble presence, and is very comical yet empathetic.”

Senior Aubrey Lawson plays the daughter, Ellie, who is balancing the life of a teenage girl and trying to gain her mother’s attention.  Aubrey said, “I’ve been in the Glee Club since my freshman year and being in a show my senior year has always been something I've looked forward to.  I’m so excited to play Ellie and cannot wait for people to see what amazing things the Glee Club has in store for them!  A musical is something that can’t happen with just one person - it’s something that happens with a team.  The Glee Club has been putting in countless hours not only during school, but also during their own time, to learn parts, memorize lines, and learn songs.  Everyone has been putting in their time and effort to make this a musical that’s worth seeing.”
