Football Ventures to Brother Rice for Key CHSL Matchup

The Central Catholic football team will venture to Brother Rice (0-2) on Friday, Sept. 8 for a Catholic High School League (CHSL) showdown. The opening kick against the Warriors will be 7 p.m. on the campus of Lawrence Tech University. Tickets can be purchased online at https://bit.ly/3PiaTwZ.

The Fighting Irish (3-0, 1-0 CHSL) are coming a hard-fought 42-21 victory against Detroit Catholic Central on Sept. 1 in its CHSL debut. CCHS jumped out to an early 20-0 lead vs. the Shamrocks (1-1) in its home opener in Gallagher Stadium, but DCC closed the margin to 27-21 midway through the 3rd period. Fortunately for the reigning D-II state champions, they scored the contest’s final 2 TDs to help them stretch their winning streak to 18-consecutive games.

Senior RB Marquan Braswell led CCHS with a season-high 156 yards on the ground on 22 carries vs. DCC, including a 6-yard TD run. Braswell has now topped the century mark in 2 of the 1st 3 games this fall. Junior RB Tyler Morgan also had a solid effort rushing the ball, finishing with 95 yards on 18 attempts, scoring on runs of 1, 5, and 18 yards.

Senior QB Terry Collins Jr. was also outstanding in his 3rd-career start under center for the Scarlet & Gray, completing a perfect 9-of 9 passes for 156 yards.

Overall this fall, Collins has completed 37-of-49 passes for 433 yards and 3 TDs, Braswell has rushed for a team-high 319 yards with 4 scores, and senior WR Jaylen Watson has caught a squad-best 21 passes for 225 yards.

Brother Rice, which was picked 5th in the CHSL Preseason Coaches’ Poll, suffered a 28-19 loss vs. St. Francis de Sales on Friday at home.

CCHS and Brother Rice will square off on the gridiron for the 1st time.
