Chico Johnson Named All-Northwest Ohio District Division II Player of the Year; Mike Floyd Selected Co-Coach of the Year

The awards keep piling up for Central Catholic boys’ basketball player Chico Johnson. The junior standout was named the All-Northwest Ohio District Division II Player of the Year, as selected by a 10-member media panel representing the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

Johnson is currently averaging a team-high 15.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game for the two-time reigning district champion Fighting Irish (20-5, 9-5 in Three Rivers Athletic Conference). He is shooting 45.0 percent (135-of-300) from the field and a squad-best 77.6 percent (66-of-85) from the charity stripe. Earlier this season, Johnson was selected first-team All-TRAC and All-District VII Division II Player of the Year.

In addition, fourth-year head coach Mike Floyd shared top D-II coaching honors with Shelby's Greg Gallaway. Floyd has guided CCHS to consecutive district titles for the first time in program history.

Johnson, Floyd and Central Catholic will look to continue their impressive post-season run against Gilmour Academy this evening in the Regional Semifinal of the OHSAA Division II Tournament at the Stroh Center. The opening tip against the Lancers (20-5) is slated for 6 pm on the campus of Bowling Green State University.

The Scarlet & Gray advanced to tonight’s matchup on the heels of post-season victories vs. Fostoria, 81-34, Port Clinton, 50-29, and most recently Tiffin Columbian, 64-45, to successfully repeat as district champion.
