Football Blanks Benedictine in Home Opener, 31-0
The Central Catholic football team registered a convincing 31-0 victory against Benedictine on Friday in Gallagher Stadium. With the shutout win, the Fighting Irish improve to 1-1 on the season.
Senior RB Chris Edmonds did a majority of CCHS’s damage on the ground, finishing with a game-high 138 yards on 16 carries and a pair of TDs. Edmonds opened the scoring with a 73-yard touchdown burst in the first period & was credited with a 5-yard TD scamper in the second quarter.
The Scarlet & Gray also benefitted from a 1-yard TD plunge by senior QB Ty’Waun Clark and a 2-yard scoring pass from Clark to senior WR Javon Murphy to send tonight’s matchup into a running-clock situation.
Central Catholic closed out the scoring on the strength of a 31-yard field goal from senior PK Brian Bishop on the final play of the first half.
Offensively, Clark completed an efficient 13-of-19 passes for 167 yards and 1 TD. Murphy was Clark’s favorite target, reeling in a game-high 6 receptions for 58 yards.
As good as CCHS was offensively, its defense was even better. The Fighting Irish surrendered only 84 yards of total offense against the 7-time state champion Bengals (0-2), including a mere 24 yards on the ground.
Central Catholic will return to the gridiron against Olentangy Orange on Friday, Sept. 2 at home. The opening kick against the Pioneers is slated for 7 pm in Gallagher Stadium. A season ago, the Fighting Irish blanked Olentangy Orange, 28-0, on the road.
