Football Looks to Extend Winning Streak vs. Rival St. John’s Jesuit on Friday

The Central Catholic football team will look to extend its winning streak to three-consecutive games when the Fighting Irish travel to rival St. John’s Jesuit on Friday, Sept. 17. The opening kick against the Titans (2-1, 0-1 TRAC) is slated for 7 pm at Lyden Field.

CCHS (2-2, 1-0 TRAC), the three-time reigning Three Rivers Athletic Conference champions, are coming off dominating back-to-back victories against Olentangy Orange, 28-0, and Findlay, 41-6, the last two Fridays. The Scarlet & Gray outgained the Pioneers and Trojans by a combined 316 yards, 720-404, to even its overall record at 2-2.

Most recently against Findlay, junior QB Ty'Waun Clark accounted for a season-high four touchdowns, three passing and one rushing. Clark completed an efficient 16 of 19 passes for 231 yards, his second-highest total this fall. Over the last two games, the left-handed signal caller is 34-of-42 passing for 467 yards with five TDs.

Clark began Friday’s TRAC opener with a 62-yard TD strike to senior WR Sam Lee and Central Catholic never looked back. The duo of Clark and Lee hooked up again on CCHS’s next possession, this time from 31 yards out, to give the home team a double-digit advantage. Lee, who finished with four catches for a season-best 119 yards, has now found the end zone in each of the last three contests.

Junior WR Javon Murphy added a game-high seven catches for 89 yards, while senior RB Josh Watson had a game-high 62 rushing yards.

Clark is currently second in the TRAC in completions (60) and TD passes (6), third in passing yards (692) and tied for 10th in TDs scored (3), Lee is second in receiving yards (343), tied for second in TDs scored (5) and third in receptions (20) and Watson is fifth in rushing yards (258).

Central Catholic will be in search of its sixth-straight victory against its crosstown rivals. A season ago, the Fighting Irish claimed a hard-fought 49-42 home triumph. CCHS’s last loss in the series occurred on Oct. 27, 2017, when it suffered a 13-6 road setback.

St. John’s Jesuit is coming off a 7-6 road setback at Lima Senior on Friday. The Titans scored first against the Spartans, but their extra point was blocked. SJJ played the second half without starting QB Blake Lichtenberg and backup Tommy Gallagher, both of whom suffered injuries.
