Girls’ Basketball Falters vs. No. 2 Seed Bellevue in Overtime, 45-42, in Division II District Finals
The Central Catholic girls’ basketball team suffered a 45-42 overtime loss against No. 2 seed Bellevue in the Division II district finals on Saturday at Old Fort High School. With the extra period loss, CCHS finishes its season with an 18-8 overall record.
The No. 6 seed Fighting Irish were outscored 13-0 over the final 7 minutes in regulation and allowed the Lady Red to tally the final 5 points in the extra period to bring an end to their 2023-24 campaign.
Senior Corniya Clay led CCHS with 12 points, followed closely by classmate Brooklyn Vaughn with 10 points and 12 rebounds to post another double-double. In addition, senior Sophia Farrugia contributed 8 points and 9 boards.
Audrey Turner paced Bellevue (21-5) with a game-high 21 points, Hailey Rees added 16 points and four rebounds, and Kaitlyn Turinsky contributed 8 points and a squad-best 8 caroms.
Saturday’s game marked the final contest for CCHS’s 5-member senior class – Corniya Clay, Lauren Dempsey, Sophia Farrugia, Aubriana Moroyoqui, Brooklyn Vaughn. This group won at least 18 games each of the last 3 years and helped CCHS claim back-to-back Three Rivers Athletic Conference championships.
